It features a main spindle (headstock) that feeds and rotates the bar, a counter spindle (pick-off spindle) to receive and work on the back end of the part, and a multitude of independently controlled tool stations arranged around the workpiece. These stations include driven tooling (live tools) for milling flats, slots, cross-holes, and complex contours. Advanced models feature multiple guide bushings, Y-axis movement on tool posts for off-center milling, and even secondary attachments for further operations like laser marking or part inspection. This allows the complete machining of a part-front, back, and all peripheral features-in a single, continuous cycle without human intervention until the bar is exhausted.

Control and synchronization are managed by Mazak's specialized CNC system, often a variant of MAZATROL optimized for Swiss-type programming. It precisely coordinates the synchronized movements of the main spindle, counter spindle, multiple tool slides, and bar feeder.
