The Hexagon Leica AT960 Laser Tracker is the world's leading portable instrument for ultra-large-scale, high-precision 3D measurement. It defines the standard for measuring the geometry and alignment of structures and assemblies that are tens of meters in size-from entire aircraft fuselages and wind turbine nacelles to ship sections and particle accelerators. By bringing metrology-grade accuracy directly to the point of assembly, it revolutionizes how large-scale manufacturing and construction are verified and aligned.
The system operates on the principle of interferometry or absolute distance measurement (ADM). The tracker's compact, robust housing contains a laser beam that is steered by two high-resolution angular encoders (horizontal and vertical). The beam is directed to a Spherically Mounted Retroreflector (SMR, or "target ball") held against the points of interest on the object. The laser light reflects directly back to the tracker. By precisely measuring the two angles and the distance to the SMR, the tracker calculates the 3D coordinates of that point with extraordinary accuracy, often to within microns over tens of meters.
The AT960 is renowned for its "Infinite" Horizontal Frontal (IHF) feature, meaning its beam can rotate a full 360 degrees horizontally without any dead zones, and its high-speed steering mechanism allows for dynamic tracking of a moving target at over 4 m/s. It incorporates an Absolute Interferometer (AIFM) that can instantly recover measurements even if the laser beam is broken, a critical feature in busy environments. It is extremely portable, designed for quick setup on a tripod in almost any orientation.
The tracker is the central hub in a measurement network. It can be used alone for simple point measurement, or multiple trackers can work together for volumetric analysis. It is commonly used with accessories like the T-Probe (a wireless probed tool) and T-Scan (a handheld laser scanner), which use the tracker's laser to determine their own position in space, turning them into portable, tracked measuring devices.

The Leica AT960 is an enabler of digital assembly and "build-to-print" processes in aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and energy. It ensures components fit together perfectly the first time, guides robotic assembly, verifies jigs and fixtures, and creates "as-built" digital twins of massive structures, saving immense time, cost, and materials.
